Day 106 – Lavenham Church

ACE.106-lavenham church 160717-2

Made an early morning walk up to the local church today – here is the resultant watercolour and ink sketch. It’s a beautiful spot – but I’m thinking that less picturesque scenes are more my forte. I’m not satisfied with any of my recent sketches.

  1. Aha! I was in Lavenham last weekend, and recognised this church from your picture. (Those bushes are quite something, aren’t they?) Although we looked at the church, we shied away from sketching it, so you have my admiration at producing this very satisfying (and accurate-looking) scene. Hats off! 🙂
(P.S. Got any sketches of my nemesis, the wonky tea shop? 😉 )

      • I wish you luck; Lavenham is full of the terrifyingly picturesque, isn’t it? There is a bench facing the tea shop, conveniently, but it doesn’t necessarily offer the most rewarding view of the scene (as I discovered). In retrospect we thought we’d have done better to sit in the bus shelter and look down the opposite street which has the fancy hotel/pub on the corner instead…oh so many benches, so little time! 🙂

  2. I really like this one with the church in the background gives it the structure that you are desiring….I wonder if buildings and other elements helps you to build your scene. I know what you mean, when you have a beautiful scene, you have to try to work with soft and eluding (if that is the word) edges, searching for the “bones” of a scene is harder. A good way to stretch yourself.
